Como todo en este 2020 los VMA´s se realizarán con presentaciones en vivo y grabadas desde 5 puntos de la Ciudad de Nueva York: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, el Bronx y Staten Island serán las sedes en las que la candena MTV premiará a los artistas.
Este año se agregaron nuevas categorías: Mejor video musical desde casa, Mejor actuación de cuarentena y Héroes cotidianos: trabajadores médicos de primera línea.
